VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We'd like to thank our hard-working and dedicated volunteers who make the #SFStairClimb possible. Without you, we would not be the powerful and memorable event that it is, and we are grateful to you. All volunteers will get a lunch and a commemorative #SFSTAIRCLIMB t-shirt. Training and orientation will be provided by the event staff prior to the opening of registration. If additional training or orientation is required, you will be notified prior to the event.

Friday Event Setup

Friday 9/6/19

3:00PM – 7:00PM (6 volunteers)

 

Description: Want to do two shifts (Friday and Saturday)? Want to climb on Saturday and not volunteer that day too? Can’t make it Saturday and still want to help? This shift is for you!

 

As a setup volunteer, you will:

  • Need to be able to lift and carry boxes and other materials

  • Help to place tables/chairs

  • Hang signage on tents

 

This is a crucial and VERY appreciated role so that we can be close to “event-ready” by the time we leave there Friday night! Some heavy lifting and carrying involved. We will feed you a light dinner.

Friday Goodie Bag Stuffing

Friday 9/6/19

11:00AM – 2:00PM (5 volunteers)

 

Description: Want to do two shifts (Friday and Saturday)? Want to climb on Saturday and not volunteer that day too? Can’t make it Saturday and still want to help? This shift is for you!

 

As a Goodie Bag volunteer, you will:

  • Set up the registration area, fold t-shirts, stuff goodie bags, put ribbons on finisher medals, etc.

 

This is a crucial and VERY appreciated role so that we can be close to “event-ready” by the time we leave there Friday night! We will feed you a light dinner.

Event Logistics

Saturday 9/7/19

6:30AM – 9:00AM (10 Volunteers)

 

Description: Event Logistics Marshals are the eyes and ears of the event. You will help direct traffic and keep the flow of cars/pedestrians moving safely.

Duties:

  • Finish setting up the event before guests arrive (whatever we didn’t finish Friday)

  • Greet sponsors, food trucks, fire trucks, etc and help them with unloading of gear and parking

  • Direct traffic around street closures

  • Make sure only vehicles with parking passes are parked in our signed/metered zones

  • Being the eyes and ears of the event and alerting emergencies to Medical Team personnel.

Ideal Groups / Abilities: Retired or active Firefighters / Police Officers / EMS / Military, or College Adults interested in a career in public safety, or members of local community groups CERT / Reserve Firefighters, recruits.

Reports To: Event Producer, Volunteer Manager, Course Managers and Climb Command Staff.

 

 

Climber Check-In/Registration 

Saturday 9/7/19

7AM – 12:00PM (12 volunteers)

Description: This volunteer assignment is fast-paced and hectic! All climbers, volunteers, and media report to Check-in to receive participant materials and directions. 

As a Check-in volunteer, you will:

  • Identify and distribute participant materials: Race bib, t-shirt, goodie bag, etc

  • Ensure completion of Participant Release of Liability/Waiver and other registration forms if not completed in advance.

  • Provide information about climb layout and program

  • Direct members of the Press, VIPs, Dignitaries, and Vendors to appropriate personnel

Volunteers need to be able to handle pressure, answer climber questions and follow directions. This position is ideally suited for a volunteer who has been a participant or volunteered at a race check-in previously. Orientation and training will be provided on the day of the event.

Bag Check

Saturday 9/7/19

7:00AM – 12:00PM (6 Volunteers)

Description: This volunteer assignment is fast paced! Climbers and volunteers may wish to have personal items secured in the bag check area. Volunteers must work quickly, courteously and accurately to tag and secure personal items.

Start/Finish Timing Help

Saturday 9/7/19

7:00AM – 12:00PM (2 Volunteers)

 

Description: Volunteer will be stationed at the start or finish line and will assist the timing company in recording the times of finishers. You may also help the timing company cut shoe tags off of climbers. Once the last climber is done, volunteers will assist timing company in cleaning up and loading out start/finish areas.

 

Volunteer ALS/BLS/EMS

Saturday 9/7/19

7:00AM – 12:00PM (35 VOLUNTEERS)

Description: This volunteer position is for EMT/Paramedics ONLY. ALS/BLS support at various stages of the course (roaming the course, in the stairwells at rest areas, in the elevator, at the finish, and in plaza-level 1st aid base tent)

Ideal Groups / Abilities: Active EMT/ Paramedic.

Reports To: Event Producer and Climb Command Staff.

 

Event Support

Saturday 9/7/19

6:00AM – 11:00AM (10 Volunteers to help with load-in and event)

Description: Event Support is the muscle of the #SFSTAIRCLIMB. If it needs to be moved, lifted, set up, directed or assisted we rely on you. Volunteers are primarily charged with helping load-in and set up the event, as well as with moving ice, water, etc as needed throughout the event. This job requires standing for prolonged periods, bending and lifting 20+ lbs.

Raffle Support

Saturday 9/7/19

8:00AM – 12:00PM (4 Volunteers)

Description: Walk around and sell 50/50 raffle tickets to climbers, friends, family and guests. Must be friendly, outgoing, trustworthy, and good with money. This is a fun role and will get you out on the plaza schmoozing with the public.

Directional Volunteer

Saturday 9/7/19

7:30AM – 11:30AM (6 Volunteers)

Description: Help direct guests to registration, bag check, start line, etc. A perfect role for friendly outgoing quick-learners.

Stairwell Volunteer/Water Station

Saturday 9/7/19

7:30AM – 12:00PM (23 volunteers)

Description: We could not do this event without the volunteers in the stairwell. You’ll be stationed on one of the rest stop or water stop floors, handing out water, collecting empty bottles, and cheering the climbers along. The climbers don’t only need water, they need motivation! You can cheer them on and encourage them to the top. High enthusiasm and a great attitude is required.

Finish Line Volunteer

Saturday 9/7/19

7:30AM – 11:30AM (7 Volunteers)

Description: Hang out on the 61st floor and cheer on climbers as they cross the finish line.

 

As a Finish Line volunteer, you will:

  • Distribute finisher medals

  • Distribute water

  • Help keep the flow of the finish and direct guests towards the elevators, restrooms, etc

Finish Line Photographer

Saturday 9/7/19

7:30AM – 12:00PM (4 Volunteers)

Description: Hang out on the 61st floor and cheer on climbers as they cross the finish line.

 

As a Finish Line Photographer, you will take “official” photos of climbers as they cross the finish line. We will post those photos with their race results that afternoon.

  • You must have your own digital camera (not a cell phone)

  • be comfortable taking lots of photos quickly and accurately

  • be able to upload the photos to our FTP or Google drive immediately following the event

  • Have previous photography (amateur ok) experience

  • To be considered for this role, you will need to be approved by the volunteer manager, as getting good finish line photos of climbers is crucial! They may ask for a link to your website or portfolio and description of your experience.

Course Motivator

Saturday 9/7/19

7:30AM – 12:00PM (20 – 30 volunteers)

Description: Course Motivators are the life of the climb. You’ll be cheering the climbers as they begin their journey and after they finish the climb. The climbers are going to be tired, so they need you to let them know they did a great job! Feel free to bring your own cowbells, pompons, and good attitude and enthusiasm to motivate the climbers. High enthusiasm is required.

Event Load-Out

Saturday 9/7/19

11:00AM - 3:00PM (6 Volunteers)

 

Description: Event Support is the muscle of the #SFSTAIRCLIMB. If it needs to be moved, lifted, set up, directed or assisted we rely on you! Event Load-Out crew will help us close out an amazing day. You will help direct traffic and keep the flow of cars/pedestrians moving safely.

 

Duties:

  • Help sponsors, food trucks, fire trucks, etc pack up and load-out their gear

  • Direct traffic around street closures

  • Help NFRF pack up supplies and inventory items being pack up for 2020.

As a load-out volunteer, you will need to be able to lift and carry boxes and other materials 20+ lbs.

 

This is a crucial and VERY appreciated role so that we can finish strong and leave Salesforce Tower cleaner and better than when we arrived! Some heavy lifting and carrying involved.
